The Great Wednesday Compare 2- Doris Lessing VERSUS Robertson Davies

The winner of last week's Great Wednesday Compare (Doris Lessing Vs. Norman Mailer), with a final score of 7-6, was Doris Lessing.

Close call for sure. Once again, I realize how you all are more well read than I. At least time I've heard of Mailer. I can't decide which of his books I should start with: The Executioner's Song or The Naked and The Dead. Those of you who voted for him last week, which would you recommend more?

This week, perhaps because it was Canada Day yesterday and the 2nd Canadian Book Challenge started, I'm throwing another Canuck into the compares.

Remember, vote simply by adding your comment below, base it on whatever merit you choose, voting does not end until Tuesday at 11:59 p.m. (July 8th, 2008), and please spread the word!

Who's better?

I guess I will have to refer to Moxy Fruvous' My Baby Loves a Bunch of Authors yet again.

"Who needs a shave? / It's Robertson Davies."

Robertson Davies. No question.

Still sticking with Doris Lessing. :)

I haven't read 'The Executioner's Song', John...but I loved 'The Naked and the Dead'. If I were you I would start with that one.

As for this week's compare...I haven't read either one, so I'm going to use my old standby criteria and vote for the author with the best beard. Davies.

Argh!!! I don't know! They both had a tremendous influence on me when I was growing up. It's like making me choose between Christmas and Hallowe'en.

Okay, I'll go with Hallowe'en - Robertson Davies.

Doris Lessing is amazing, but I don't feel the same deep connection to her work as I do to that of Robertson Davies. My vote is for him.

Oh dear. I so hate to abandon my countryman, but I prefer Christmas to Hallowe'en. So, Lessing.

Robertson Davies is the one for me.

As I've said before I haven't read Lessing but Robertson Davies, oh yeah! I just have his last two books to read then I've read everything. He's one of my all time favourite authors so my vote definitly goes to ...

Robertson Davies!

Is it sad that I haven't read either?? Guess I'm going to have to abstain this week!

Robertson Davies. I've got to reread him.

As for Mailer.....oh, Naked and the Dead, I guess. Executioner's Song. eh. Six of one, half dozen of the other.

What's Bred in the Bone sits on my bedside table, wanting to be read. I frequently shuffle it out of the TBR queue because I'm saving it for just the right moment when I need a saucy Canuk chuckle.

Robertson is always someone to look forward to.

I haven't read either, but I bought a Davies book, on Nicola's rec I believe, so I'll vote for him and his beard.
Never underestimate the value of a good beard in a photo.

Tough choice, but Davies is just so-o-o much more fun.
