The Great Wednesday Compare 3: Sidney Sheldon VERSUS Mary Higgins Clark

The winner of the last week's Great Wednesday Compare (Sidney Sheldon Vs. Danielle Steel) with a final score of 7-0 was Sidney Sheldon.

I have to admit a snobbish aversion towards these writers, as I haven't read either and have judged them as such that I wouldn't enjoy them if I had. In my defense, I will read them someday, just to make sure. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I was surprised to see a shut-out against Steel. According to her own website "There are more than 570 million copies of her books in print, and every one of her books is a bestseller. In short, Danielle Steel is the most popular author writing today. She is read by women, men, young people, old people in 47 countries and 28 languages." Well, popular is certainly subjective, isn't it? Still, she's doing something right and if it isn't writing, it must be business. But, according to Nicola, Sheldon's books were more on the steamy side, whereas Steel's were sappier and, around these parts, steam triumphs over sap.

But what about suspense?

Who's better?

Hooray for the Danielle Steel shutout! Never read one of her books, but detested a movie I saw when I was a teenager called "The Promise". It was based on one of her novels. I still remember that viewing experience and when I speak of it, it's always in bitter tones.

I'm sticking with Sheldon this week. The one MHC I read seemed overly formulaic.

Don't start reading these authors now John, unless you need to barf. They would be good inducers for that. LOL!

If you go against my advise, don't say I didn't warn you.

If I had to pick one for this week, it would be Sheldon again.

I cut my teeth on Mary Higgins Clark. I'm going with her.

I tossed a coin and Sidney Sheldon won.

While I've enjoyed the Higgins Clark books I've read, I'll stick with Sheldon this week, too.

While I haven't read Sheldon in years, I have picked up the odd MHC in more recent memory. I like that hers are more suspence than epic.

I vote for Clark, and maybe this week will be closer in votes.

I'm going with Mary Higgins Clark. Again I was a teen when I read her but she introduced me to the thriller type of story and I was really hooked on her at the time. But I haven't read anything recent and doubt I will.

You could have put Harold Robbins against Sidney Sheldon that would have been interesting, too. :-)

I missed the Sheldon vs Steele debate. I totally agree that Sheldon should win. I used to be a fan of Steele's but they got dumb dumb dumb and oh so predictable.

Between Sheldon and Higgins Clark, I still like Sheldon better.

BTW, I just finished my second Canadian book:

Their eyes are mesmerizing!!! Having read neither, I think I've seen a TV movie based on Sidney Sheldon's something or other so I'll go with him. He looks a bit like Aaron Spelling there.

Oh dear, not a fan of either, so I am holding my nose and jumping in with a random vote. For MHC.

I have never read MHC but she did speak at our library a few years ago and she was delightful and entertaining. It's just not my genre. I haven't read Sheldon in MANY years but if I had to read one, it'd be him.

Aside: I am enjoying the Canadian challenge but cannot seem to change my number as I complete the months. Help, please. Linda/CT

Hi Linda/CT: Glad you're still in the challenge, not MIA. I'm in the process of the 2nd update right now. Usually, once someone reads and reviews a book for the 2nd Canadian Book Challenge, I change the number by their name in the sidebar. Most often I click on the name which takes me to that person's blog or website, then I'm able to keep track. Unfortunately for you, I don't have more than a blogger profile page--with no blog link available. Is their a place online that you post reviews (blog, Chapters, BookCrossing, etc?) If not, feel free to post them on my site preferably in the comment section of the original post. You said you're currently on your 2nd? I'll change your number to 1 (2 if you already finished) as soon as I get a link to the 1st one. Sorry for the trouble, and again, glad your still with us!
