9 months down, and 791 books have been collectively been read for the 2nd Canadian Book Challenge!
Congrats to Jo, Raidergirl and me for finishing their 13 books in March.
Welcome to PeachyTO and Charlotte who joined us this month. Peachy may have just joined, but she brings 12 reviewed books with her, read since the challenge began last July. We also welcome GeraniumCat who is on the board with her first pick this month.
Some highlights this month include:
- a review of Marian Engel's last published work
- an even more negative review of The Clockmaker than mine
- a review of the Portuguese translation of Kate Jacobs' The Friday Night Knitting Club
- this month's Gargoyle reviews brought to you by Sandra, Aaron and PeachyTO
- a collection of French Canadian fairy tales
- an expose of the pet food industry
- an encounter with author Geoff Heinricks and Al Purdy's publisher, all in a single post
- a ridiculously long title by Leanne Shapton
- the first time a journal has been reviewed for the challenge
Some authors new-to-me this month include Stephen McGregor, Margaret Buffie, Janice Kulyk Keefer, Pat Capponi and John Brady. Thanks for introducing me to their books!
Thanks to everyone for your wonderful reviews. Keep those conversations happening!

This month's Shout-Out comes from Newfoundland actor, writer and comedian (add controversial to any of those), Andy Jones. You may remember him from Codco and his roles in such films as Rare Birds, Random Passage and Young Triffie's Been Made Away With. Unlike Richard Van Camp last month who had trouble limiting his recommendations to 13, Jones feels that one will suffice: Folktales of Newfoundland (The Resilience of The Oral Tradition) by Herbert Halpert and John Widdowson. I'm assuming this text may have helped Jones along in his decision to adapt a traditional Newfoundland tale in his latest book, The Queen of Paradise Garden, illustrated by Darka Erdelji.

This month prize, generously donated by Johnna, is a black pack:
From Newfoundland, it's Kenneth J. Harvey's Blackstrap Hawco. From Random House: "Fifteen years in the making, this book is the one Canada’s “heavyweight champ of brash and beautiful literature” was meant to write. An epic masterwork about Newfoundland’s working class, Blackstrap Hawco spans more than a century in gorgeous and widely varied prose, reminding us that even when writing about the degradation of identity and language, Harvey does it magnificently."
And...
From Victoria, British Columbia, by way of Saskatchewan, it's Craig Boyko's Blackouts. From McClelland and Stewart: "This exhilarating first book of fiction introduces Craig Boyko as a writer of astonishing range, inventiveness, and vision. Infused with a razor-sharp wit, Boyko’s stories illuminate those pivotal moments in every life when we discover how difficult it is to be true to ourselves — and to the people who think they know us best."
To win Blackstrap Hawco and Blackouts, tell me three books reviewed for the challenge with the word "black" in the title. I'll pick and post the winner on April 12th. Contest is open to everyone, but entries from Canadian Book Challenge Participants will count as two.

Blackstrap Hawco, Blackouts, and Through Black Spruce.
Hi John.. I've read three more this month:
The Cellist of Sarajevo, Steven Galloway
Away, Jane Urquhart
Ex-Cottagers in Love, JM Kearns
I've actually read 3 more before the end of March, bringing my total to 13 -- I just haven't had time to post reviews about them -- those are forthcoming and I'll keep you posted, John.
I read a crime fiction in March and forgot to let you know. Here it is:
The Murder Stone by Louise Penny
PeachyTO has put me to shame! I've been in this thing since July and I've only managed to post 3 reviews. All this book-learnin' at college and university is severely cramping my book-reading style! Can't wait to finish and read something for fun again. I'm setting a goal and putting it out there for all to see: 2 reviews from me in April.
Sandra: Actually one of those has not yet been reviewed.
Claire: Great, they're now added in.
Mark: Congrats! Since the reviews will be posted in April, I'll add them to the 10th update.
Gautami: Thanks, it's now added in. I've yet to read anything by Penny.
Mrs. Peachtree: I'd say you have a pretty good reason there! Hey, are any of those textbooks Canadian?
Mrs. Peachtree... I have had a lot of time on my hands, hence the number of book reviews I've been able to submit. If I had something important like college/university to attend to, I'm sure I would have far less. At least you will have a diploma to show for your reading!
John...1)Through Black Spruce
2)Blackstrap Hawco
3)Black Ice
Thanks for all the work you put into this challenge! I'm having a great time, and continue to add books to my TBR shelf at an alarming rate.
Happy Reading!
Hi John,
Finished another book. I have left and will be done with this challenge. "Skybreaker" by Kenneth Oppel. Great book! You can see my review here: http://sherriesbooks.blogspot.com/2009/04/skybreaker.html Have a great day!!
Sherrie
P.S. John, I forgot to add.. I'd love to enter the giveaway. My answers: Through Black Spruce, Blackstrap Hawco, Black Ice.
I find so many titles that have been read. Feels really good to be in such esteemed company. Will check out the newer books.
My answers are:
1)Black Ice
2)Blackstrap Hawco
3)Through Black Spruce.
Another book to add to my list, French Canadian folklore this time instead of fairy tales.
http://back-to-books.blogspot.com/2009/04/70-talking-cat.html
The Talking Cat and other stories of French Canada by Natalive Savage Carlson.
Hey John! We read a lot of books for the challenge (and for our feature) but we've only posted up two reviews so far.
I Know It's Over by CK Kelly Martin
Shine, Coconut Moon
Ooo... I'm usually too late to enter the contests. :)
My answers are:
1)Blackstrap Hawco
2)Black Ice
3)Through Black Spruce
I'm still hopelessly behind! Congrats to everyone who fished so far!
This is an excellent giveaway, thanks Johnna!!
My 3 are:
Black Ice
Blackouts
Blackstrap Hawco
