The winner of last week's Great Wednesday Compare (Jay Gatsby VERSUS Jacob Marley), with a final score of 5-0 was Jacob Marley.
The Great or Bah-Humbug Gatsby? As I said last week, I'm really not a fan of Gatsby. So I'm not really disappointed in last week's vote. Nor am I surprised. Not only did Marley have an unfair Christmas advantage last week, but I've heard the Great Gatsby described as the Great American Novel. As most of my readers are Canadian, I assume its Americana is irrelevant to us. Just as its greatness is lost on me. As those of you that read Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi will remember, it was one of the books she and her students studied. I hoped that I'd finally realize what it was that people saw in the book, but no, I still don't like it. Will Baz Luhrmann's movie adaptation convince me? We'll just have to wait and see.
For now, however, let's say goodbye Gatsby.

Ooooh. Although I'm partial to Marley (such a memorable fellow!) I'm gonna have to go with Scrooge. He's just a more well-developed character.
Scrooge!
I missed last week. Shoot. Marley over Gatsby, seriously? Marley's a footnote! A stock ghost figure. Take away his chains and there's no one there.
I'm voting Scrooge.
Bah! Humbug!
Can anyone quote Marley?
I'm for Scrooge, too.
Happy Holidays!
Scrooge, for the reasons already mentioned (better developed character, character development thought the book etc).
Ebeneezer Scrooge as he a more well developed character.
Besides, I agree with him, "bah humbug" I don't celebrate Christmas. In fact, there are lots of people who don't but everyone assumes the entire universe celebrates it. I do like the time off work though.
Really? Everyone is going with Scrooge? I have to respectfully disagree. I'm going with Marley!
I'm going with Scrooge! Marley's great, but Scrooge is more memorable by far!
I'm going against the popular vote too. I'm going with Marley. A ghost fettered in chains is much more interesting than a grumpy old man!
They are both pretty grand, so I am flipping a coin here.
... Scrooge, it is.
I'll say Scrooge. Because Marley is full of regrets and fettered in chains of his own making, while Scrooge is allowed the chance to change. And after all, at the end of the story "it was always said of him, that he knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive possessed the knowledge".
My vote goes for Scrooge.
Happy Christmas, John!
