The Canadian Book Challenge 4- 6th Roundup!

Happy New Year's everyone! I hope everyone is excited for the new year and that those of you nursing hangovers today aren't in too much pain.

Since this is the half way point, I figured it was a good time to do a midterm report. Below you'll find all the titles that have been read up to December 1st. As you add your links today, I'll be adding those in as well.

Before that, let's get some contests out of the way. Last month you were asked to either add a recipe in the comment section or review a cookbook. I should apologize at this point. In the excitement of the cookbook challenge, I said last month that "we've not had a cookbook reviewed in 4 years of the challenge!" A few people have written to set me and my incredibly shoddy memory straight. We've had plenty in fact. Niranjana and Steph both had, back in July (see below), and possibly more. I threw Niranjana and Steph's names into the hat for this month's draw, as my way of apologizing. So, without further ado, the winner of 3 Chefs: The Kitchen Men by Michael Bonacini, Massimo Capra and Jason Parsons, generously donated by Pooker, is...

Now onto next month's contest. If you can find these quotes:

1. "It's a brilliant and complex story that illustrates how our freedoms are lost when we begin to deny personal equality and allow the state to decide what we will do and who we will be."

2. "I think this character is going to be remembered and celebrated for a long, long time. The book's timeless message will be just as profound 50 years from now."

3. "If I were Canadian, I could probably make some remark about the novel being intrinsic to Canadian sense of identity, or the LGBT community, or hazard that Eve is a metaphor for the maturation of the province – but I have no idea, it’s only a glimmer in my immigrant perception that this may be the case, so I’ve confined my thoughts to the story itself as much as possible."

4. "But I wholly enjoyed all the inappropriate choices I’ve made in reading this in a cool and bright September, nearly eight years after I read the second John Cardinal and Lise Delorme mystery."

tell me the reviewer and the book (email me!) and you will have your name submitted into a random draw for two books donated by Goose Lane Editions, courtesy of Corey Redekop:

Darryl Whetter's The Push & The Pull
Keith Oatley's Therefore Choose

And now, once again, let's add to this wonderful list!
What Canadian books did you read and review for the Canadian Book Challenge 4 in December? Let everyone know in the comments below.

- Make sure you tell me how many you've completed so far so that I can record it in the sidebar progress report
- It doesn't count as complete until the review is done!
- When people leave links, try to visit one another's blogs and read what they had to say. Comment. Encourage. The discussion of Canadian books is what this challenge is all about.

That's an amazing list.

I have been ill for a while now so I didn't read any books during December. I also didn't update during November so I'm posting my review from that month. There is only one, so I believe my total is 12 now.

The Matter With Morris by David Bergen

I'm still trying to get caught up with reviewing the books I've read. I did manage to get a couple more posted. Happy New year to all.

19: As For Me and My House by Sinclair Ross

20: Strike/Slip by Don McKay

I read 3 last month! Yay! That brings me to 8.

The Blue Castle by LM Montgomery
Out of Old Nova Scotia Kitchens by Marie Nightingale
An Orange from Portugal by Anne Simpson

And wow, John, that was a lot of links and I bet a lot of work. Thanks for doing that.

Anonymous said...

So job you have done here, John! It will come handy when I have a bit of time to visit blogs.

I'm still behind in my reviews despite my best intentions to catch up. This month, I have reviewed Payback by Margaret Atwood and Harbour View by Binnie Brennan, which brings me to a total of 8 reviews.

And "so" should read "some".
As you can see, Santa didn't bring me a new PC!

Scanning through this impressive list leaves me with a feel for just how large this Canadian book loving has become, and it's comforting. I shall certainly be doing some visiting and with any luck, win myself something!

Thanks John, I've just spent an hour or more clicking on various reviews and that just skims the surface. I have found two of the quotes but it's going to take more time to find the other two.

Meanwhile I thought I should post the two books that I read in December for this challenge.

#8 The Ash Garden by Dennis Bock - quite a find I thought even though it's been sitting on my shelf for several years

#9 Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somay Gowda

Happy new year!

What a fabulous assortment of books everyone has read so far!

I read two books in December, bringing my total to 22 Canadian books read so far.

"Call Me Russell" (2010) Russell Peters
"You Could Live a Long Time: Are You Ready?" (2010) Lyndsay Green

Swordsman said...

Interesting list. I'll have to go through it again to see if anything catches my eye.

Surprisingly this challenge has shown me just how much Canadian material that I do read as I am not going out of my way to complete this challenge.

In December I managed to add 2 more to my list to bring my total to 11. This month I read Call Me Russell - Russell Peters and The China Wall: The Timeless Legend of Johnny Bower.

That's an amazing list, John! Thanks for putting it all together.

I'm embarassed to admit that I didn't read/review one book by a Canadian author this month. I have a review scheduled for January though!

I did a dual review post for Restoring Harmony and Boys, Bears and a Serious Pair of Hiking Boots. Here's the link for the post:

This brings my total up to 8!

I love this list! I can't believe how many of these Canadian books I have not read!

And while I did read several books in December, I've reviewed not one of them, so I'm steady at 13 (I think). Such was the craziness of December in my household. I'll try to catch up next month. Happy New Year everyone.

And Luanne, I've emailed you for your mailing address so I can send the Chefs out to you. Congrats on the win!

Thanks for the lovely listings, John. I'm still at number 9. I tried reading "Lemon" by Cordelia Strube but could just not get into it. happy New Year!

What a marvellous list.

I read 2 more Canadian books in November, taking me to a total of 10 so far.

The first was Giles Blunt's Forty Words for Sorrow

The second is not by a Canadian author but takes place on a train crossing the country from the east to west coast and there is lots of local flavour and descriptions of all the places the train stops along the way - The Edge by Dick Francis

I think I'm at:
14. King Leary - Paul Quarrington
15. Unless - Carol Shields

plus, I reviewed Linwood Barclay's Fear the Worst which got missed on the round-up. I can't imagine how you missed one in that list of 100,000 reviews and links.
Well done sir on the round-up!

Holy moly, that is the craziest list!! Thank you so much for putting that together. What a load of work that must have been.

In the last couple of months (I don't think I've updated here in a while) I've read Bible Camp Bloodbath by Joey Comeau, Yellowknife by Steve Zipp, Fractured by Joanna Karaplis, and One Bird's Choice by Iain Reid. I also read Martha Baillie's The Incident Report but haven't reviewed it yet.

Hey, I've done better than I thought! Admittedly, I haven't a clue what that brings my total too. But it's true that most of the books I read are Canadian.

I apologize for being a bit too lazy to look up how to make the above titles links (I can't remember); my hubby is waiting for me to go watch a movie. For any of those books I mentioned, please visit my list of reviews:

Thank you again, John!

Whoops, that's "total to," not "too."

Hey, John, what a load of work you've put into this round-up list! It is much appreciated -- I've just checked out quite a few reviews & will be back for more.

This month's reads bring my totals up to 14 books by new-to-me Canadian authors: however, I realized I was unintentionally reading only women authors (whom I naturally gravitate toward)so I am going to also read some new-to-me male authors as well. Currently I've read 13 women and 1 man.

Here are the titles:

Penelope's Way / Blanche Howard

On the Proper Use of Stars / Dominique Fortier

Second Rising / Catherine M.A. Wiebe

Trumpets Sound No More / Jon Redfern

42. It's Not About the Rose by Veronika Martenova Charles
43. Call Me Russell by Russell Peters
44. Bookweirder by Paul Glennon

I'm up to six at this point:
1.The Book Of Negroes by Lawrence Hill
2.The Blue Castle by Lucy Maud Montgomery
3.The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
4.Glass Voices by Carol Bruneau
5.Never Cry Wolf by Farley Mowat
6.The Cellist Of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway

John I think what you're doing with this is amazing. Because of you, Canadian authors and books are finding a wider audience and that's a wonderful thing for everybody - authors, publishers and readers! Thanks for all that you do.

Thanks to everyone for their kind words. Rest assured though, it's more fun than it is work.

Have read many fantastic Canadian books lately (Bone Cage, Crime Machine, Am I Disturbing You? Calling Cards...) but have no reviews to post yet! Hoping that January will give me a bit of time to catch up.
Thanks for the wonderful round-up John; very useful. Happy New Year!

I wish I could say that I have a revivew this month, but alas, i didn't get it written; it will count in January. I will stay at 7 until that time.

I didn't get any in last month, but I am at 7, not 5.
Great list; I'm figuring out how best to utilize it in my quest to read more Canadian work.

I've made some progress, I'm now up to MONT D'IBERVILLE (7 books read)!

#5 Come, Thou Tortoise by Jessica Grant

#6 Giraffe and Bird by Rebecca Bender

#7 The Renegade Hunter by Lynsay Sands

And thanks for putting the list of reviews together, John, it's wonderful to have them up like that.
