Canadian Book Challenge 4- Final Roundup

Happy Canada Day!

We've made it! 12 months of Canadian reading! We've read through elections, hockey riots, floods, fires, personal celebrations and sorrows, snow and sun. We've read Canada Reads contenders, Giller prize winners, self-published books, bestsellers, graphic novels, cookbooks, classics, young adult books, contemporary novels, controversial books, political books, religious books, romances, thrillers, sci-fi, anthologies, memoirs, First Nations authors, french authors, Japanese Canadian authors, books from every province and territory, authors from A-Z, funny books, tragic books, history books, poetry, plays, picture books, books by and about Margaret Atwood and I could go on. It's been another fun, enlightening year of Canadian reading and my TBR list is now bursting at the seams. Thanks to everyone who participated by reading, reviewing, sharing and discussing.

A few more stats:
- The most commonly read book AND author was Emma Donoghue, who sets a new Canadian Book Challenge record with 21 reviews (more than a 3rd of participants) and all for a single book: Room.
- The author with the most different titles reviewed was Margaret Atwood with 14
- The grand total of books read for all Canadian Book Challenges combined is 3093. Not bad, but if we're to reach 10,000 as I told the Globe & Mail was my long term goal, we've got a lot of reading ahead of us!

Before we go, one final prize to give away: a book from every province and territory goes out to one random winner, chosen from those 34 participants who managed to read their way to the top of Mount Logan (13 or more books). And that winner is...Scrat! Congratulations Scrat! Which books will she win? You'll just have to keep following her blog to find out!

Special thanks to the following companies and individuals for their support in making the 4th Canadian Book Challenge possible, through donations, promotion, and more: Roderick Benns, Random House Canada, Goose Lane Editions, Corey Redekop, Pooker, Von Allan, and CBC Radio's Canada Reads Team.

Before you go, and hopefully start the 5th annual Canadian Book Challenge, I'm hoping to leave you with a few survey questions to copy into the comment section and answer below:

1. Did you have fun taking part in the Canadian Book Challenge? Why/why not?
2. Did you meet the goal of 13 books?
3. Did you theme your choices in any way?
4. Did you preselect your choices and if so, did you stick to that list?
5. Did you read other participant reviews?
6. What was your least and most favourite book read for the challenge?
7. Are there any books you've added to your tbr list as a result of this challenge?
8. Are there any Canadian authors you are surprised not to see in the list of above list of books read?
9. Did you win a prize? And if so, did you review any prize books?
10. Was this your first time participating in the challenge?
11. Will you participate again?
12. Are you Canadian and if not, what attracted you to this challenge?

7. Are there any books you've added to your tbr list as a result of this challenge? Not right now

8. Are there any Canadian authors you are surprised not to see in the list of above list of books read? Not really since it was was such a broad spectrum

1. Did you have fun taking part in the Canadian Book Challenge? Why/why not?

Yes, read lots of books I wouldn't otherwise have read

2. Did you meet the goal of 13 books?

Yep

3. Did you theme your choices in any way?

mostly crime fiction 'cos that's what I like to read, though I threw in a Margaret Atwood as well

4. Did you preselect your choices and if so, did you stick to that list?

Not really, though I owned a few books I wanted to read at the beginning, the rest were things I picked up over the course of the year

5. Did you read other participant reviews?

Some, not all - usually the ones who had posted before me each month, then I would forget to come back and read the rest

6. What was your least and most favourite book read for the challenge?

Stef Penney's THE TENDERNESS OF WOLVES was my favourite I think, Atwood's YEAR OF THE FLOOD my least favourite. But aside from the Atwood I really did like them all - Giles Blunt's FORTY WORDS FOR SORROW was another one along with Pennyey's that had a wonderful sense of place.

7. Are there any books you've added to your tbr list as a result of this challenge?

more 'authors to follow' than specific books

8. Are there any Canadian authors you are surprised not to see in the list of above list of books read?

I don't know enough about them still to know who's missing

9. Did you win a prize? And if so, did you review any prize books?

No

10. Was this your first time participating in the challenge?

Yes

11. Will you participate again?

Not immediately but possibly in the future. Nothing personal but I am a bit 'challenged out' just now and am going to have a year or two of reading what I want when I want

12. Are you Canadian and if not, what attracted you to this challenge?

I'm Australian but I like reading books in different settings - it's a great way to get to know places. In the last couple of years I've also done Eastern European, Scandinavian and UK reading challenges as well as my annual Aussie Authors one. I've travelled pretty widely in Canada so was keen to read some books set in some places I've visited so that was another good reason to do it.

13. Any suggestions on how to improve?

As it's you doing all the hard work then I say you're doing a fine job - though I find the challenges that have the 'Mr linky' thing where you can link to your reviews as you write them easier to manage than yours where you have to post reviews once a month. But I don't know how hard the Mr Linky thing is to manage so maybe that's a factor.

1. Did you have fun taking part in the Canadian Book Challenge? Why/why not? Absolutely! I wouldn't do it if it wasn't fun.

2. Did you meet the goal of 13 books?
Yes indeed, 28.

3. Did you theme your choices in any way?
At least one from each province or territory. I'll do this one again in the 5th, but I'll run another with 13 books set north of 60 (26 books in total).

4. Did you preselect your choices and if so, did you stick to that list? No.

5. Did you read other participant reviews?
Not all, but as many as I could manage.

6. What was your least and most favourite book read for the challenge?
Least, easily Guy Gavriel Kay's Ysabel.

Most, not so easy. Mordecai Richler's Incomparable Atuk was great, as was Stacey May Fowles' Fear of Fighting, but I think I'm going to say Corey Redekop's Shelf Monkey.

7. Are there any books you've added to your tbr list as a result of this challenge?
I guess I need to read Emma Donoghue's Room to see what all the fuss is about. Other than that I have to read Me Write Book: It Bigfoot Memoir.

8. Are there any Canadian authors you are surprised not to see in the list of above list of books read? Donna Morrissey, Richard Van Camp, and especially Joseph Boyden.

9. Did you win a prize? And if so, did you review any prize books?
I disqualify myself from all prizes.

10. Was this your first time participating in the challenge?
No.

11. Will you participate again?
Oh yeah.

12. Are you Canadian and if not, what attracted you to this challenge? Yes. I thought the guy who created it was hot. Nah, just wanted to get a grip on this elusive CanLit beast.

13. Any suggestions on how to improve?
I agree with Bernadette's suggestion above and in fact am implementing that change in the 5th challenge.

GeraniumCat said...

1. Did you have fun taking part in the Canadian Book Challenge?
Yes, I love this challenge!

2. Did you meet the goal of 13 books?
By the skin of my teeth, yes. It's the reviewing that was nearly my undoing, though, not the reading.

3. Did you theme your choices in any way?
No. I had an idea about only reading crime novels, because I thought that would be fun, but I had trouble finding books without spending lots of money. I try to limit myself to one order from Canada per challenge.

4. Did you preselect your choices and if so, did you stick to that list?
I usually pull together a pool of possible reading at the start, but I don't restrict myself to those books.

5. Did you read other participant reviews?
One of the best things about the challenge is the other reviews - I have an ever growing list of things I'm desperate to read.

6. What was your least and most favourite book read for the challenge?
My favourite has to be my re-read off the list, William Gibson's Neuromancer. It's also one of my favourite books of all time. I don't really have a least favourite, because I enjoyed all of them.

7. Are there any books you've added to your tbr list as a result of this challenge?
Oh yes, too long to list here. For the last Canada Reads I made a list of all the long-listed books that were available here - well over half are, but some of the books I most wanted to read weren't available in either printed or ebook form, which was frustrating.

8. Are there any Canadian authors you are surprised not to see in the list of above list of books read?
No one read any Alistair MacLeod this year.

9. Did you win a prize? And if so, did you review any prize books?
No.

10. Was this your first time participating in the challenge?
No, my fourth.

11. Will you participate again?
Absolutely! I started my book for the 5th Challenge before I got up this morning.

12. Are you Canadian and if not, what attracted you to this challenge?
I'm British, but I do work in Canadian Studies, so I have an interest in encouraging people to read CanLit.

13. Any suggestions on how to improve?
I think what you are doing is brilliant! The addition of a link button would have been my only suggestion but I see you're ahead on that. The resource of the lists of books for the challenges is absolutely fantastic, I know I'll be going back to them over and over.

1. Did you have fun taking part in the Canadian Book Challenge? Why/why not? Definitely did, I ended up reading some great books.
2. Did you meet the goal of 13 books? Yep. I actually read 15.
3. Did you theme your choices in any way? Nope.
4. Did you preselect your choices and if so, did you stick to that list? I did not, I'm terrible at sticking to lists!
5. Did you read other participant reviews? Not as much as I should have, but yes.
6. What was your least and most favourite book read for the challenge? Oh my, I'm not sure I could pick just one!!
7. Are there any books you've added to your tbr list as a result of this challenge? Definitely.
8. Are there any Canadian authors you are surprised not to see in the list of above list of books read? Hmmm... not that I can think of!
9. Did you win a prize? And if so, did you review any prize books? I did not win a prize, how sad ;)
10. Was this your first time participating in the challenge? It was!
11. Will you participate again? Definitely :)
12. Are you Canadian and if not, what attracted you to this challenge? I am a Canadian yes.
13. Any suggestions on how to improve? I see you're already doing what I would suggest which is to use Mr Linky type link collections :) Might also be nice to have a dedicated page on your site for the challenge, would make it easier to find the posts for me. Thanks for hosting this!

1. Did you have fun taking part in the Canadian Book Challenge? Why/why not?
Yes of course, as I've said before it's my favourite reading challenge on the book blog block!

2. Did you meet the goal of 13 books?
Just, but yes.

3. Did you theme your choices in any way?
Nope.

4. Did you preselect your choices and if so, did you stick to that list?
No list for #4

5. Did you read other participant reviews?
Yes, that's half the fun and the best way to learn about more Canadian books!

6. What was your least and most favourite book read for the challenge?
Most: Stranger Things Have Happened ~ Carmelita McGrath, Least: Miss Elva ~ Stephens Gerard Malone

7. Are there any books you've added to your tbr list as a result of this challenge?
Lots with Annabel probably being the most recent.

8. Are there any Canadian authors you are surprised not to see in the list of above list of books read?
No, though I'm a bit surprised by the # for Redekop, Corey ... should be way higher than that!

9. Did you win a prize? And if so, did you review any prize books?
Yes, two actually and I reviewed them here and here.

10. Was this your first time participating in the challenge?
No, it was my 3rd.

11. Will you participate again?
You bet, ready, willing and able.

12. Are you Canadian and if not, what attracted you to this challenge?
Canadian.

13. Any suggestions on how to improve?
No but I think the new "linky" system will be well liked by participants.

Here we go again!

Well done everyone, and especially John for recording all the books read by us!

1. Did you have fun taking part in the Canadian Book Challenge? Why/why not?
I did! It gave me motivation to review the books I read. I really enjoyed my side challenge with the Canadian short story tour, which was inspired by the Canadian Book Challenge concept. I had fun discovering other blogs and have made friends through it.

2. Did you meet the goal of 13 books?
It was a close call, but yes!

3. Did you theme your choices in any way?
I kind of had an Atwood theme and read 9 books on or by Atwood.

4. Did you preselect your choices and if so, did you stick to that list?
Not really, but there were some books I knew I wanted to read.

5. Did you read other participant reviews?
I visited all the blogs at least once and read some of the reviews. Some of the blogs I follow on my reader. I know I will go back to this post when I need inspiration.

6. What was your least and most favourite book read for the challenge?
Tough! Let's say Moral Disorder was my favourite and Strolz's book on Atwood the least favourite.

7. Are there any books you've added to your tbr list as a result of this challenge?
Yes!

8. Are there any Canadian authors you are surprised not to see in the list of above list of books read?
Hmmm...

9. Did you win a prize? And if so, did you review any prize books?
I did! Thanks! and the ones I hadn't already read are on my TBR pile.

10. Was this your first time participating in the challenge?
Yes

11. Will you participate again?
Definitely!

12. Are you Canadian and if not, what attracted you to this challenge?
I'm not. I am writing my PhD thesis on Atwood and have an interest in Canadian literature, which i am slowly discovering.

13. Any suggestions on how to improve?
The link thingy is an improvement. Is there any way to improve commenting on your blog? My comments often get lost... And also I'd rather be called Em than emeire, which only comes up because of the openID function ;)

1. Did you have fun taking part in the Canadian Book Challenge? Why/why not?
Yes I did. It opened up to me a whole new world of Canadian books/authours I wasn’t even aware of and it made me finally pick up some books I’ve been meaning to read for years.
2. Did you meet the goal of 13 books?
Yes, though I doubted I would, I actually finished 15.
3. Did you theme your choices in any way?
No.
4. Did you preselect your choices and if so, did you stick to that list?
Yes I preselected them and I stuck to the list except for one that didn’t get read, and a few extra that did.
5. Did you read other participant reviews?
Some. I’m reading a lot of them now from the list you made of all the books read during the year.
6. What was your least and most favourite book read for the challenge?
My hands down favourite was “The Book of Negroes” by Lawrence Hill. It’s a spectacular book. My least favourite was “The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz” by Mordecai Richler.
7. Are there any books you've added to your tbr list as a result of this challenge?
Oh my yes. My tbr now has a life expectancy much longer than my own.
8. Are there any Canadian authors you are surprised not to see in the list of above list of books read? Not that I can think of. I see I’m the only one who read Don Hannah and Bruce Graham and I’d love to encourage more people to read them.
9. Did you win a prize? And if so, did you review any prize books?
I won a couple of books for the contest where we had to find the titles some quotes were from. I haven’t reviewed them yet. Saving them for Challenge 5.
10. Was this your first time participating in the challenge?
Yes.
11. Will you participate again?
Yes.
12. Are you Canadian and if not, what attracted you to this challenge?
I am Canadian and love saying so!
13. Any suggestions on how to improve? No. I think it’s amazing what you’re doing for Canadian literature already. The work you put into it is commendable.

1. Did you have fun taking part in the Canadian Book Challenge? Why/why not?
Of course I did. It keeps me reading CanLit.
2. Did you meet the goal of 13 books?
I did; in fact I read 15 although I only gave John 14 in my final email because I hadn't finished Annabel yet. But I finished off the last chapter on the evening of the 30th.
3. Did you theme your choices in any way?
I decided to only count books by authors that I had never read before. I am constantly surprised how many great writers there are that have never crossed my path.
4. Did you preselect your choices and if so, did you stick to that list?
I did preselect by going through my TBR list and highlighting the titles there that met the criteria. However, I ended up adding some that weren't on the list, usually because they were required for book club or Canada Reads.
5. Did you read other participant reviews?
I've read some when the book is one I have read myself or one I've heard a lot about.
6. What was your least and most favourite book read for the challenge?
Oh John you're going to hate me but I think by least favourite was Essex County. My most favourite was Cool Water by Diane Warren.
7. Are there any books you've added to your tbr list as a result of this challenge?
Yes, although I think I read them throughout the year (Annabel and Best Laid Plans spring to mind).
8. Are there any Canadian authors you are surprised not to see in the list of above list of books read?
Where the heck is Robertson Davies? He is one of my favourite Canadian writers of all time. I think I'm going to have to read him for the 5th challenge to get him back on the list.
9. Did you win a prize? And if so, did you review any prize books?
No, I'm not very good at competing for prizes.
10. Was this your first time participating in the challenge?
No, I guess it would be my third.
11. Will you participate again?
Yes (see #8 answer above).
12. Are you Canadian and if not, what attracted you to this challenge?
Je suis canadienne.
13. Any suggestions on how to improve?
I wouldn't have the nerve. It must be so much work.

WOW!! What a crazy post. Thanks for all the work you did in posting everyone's reviews!!

I admit I'm terrible at challenges. I can't keep up, even just to update the books I read. It's sad. But I thank you for including the ones I did submit!

This is a fantastic challenge; I'm all about CanLit and believe it ought to be widely read and promoted.

Thanks for the amazing summary: it's my favourite post to browse!

It's great fun reading Canlit and I did read 13 books (and, yes, won a prize along the way: thanks very much).

I chose my books partly from a list of Canlit classics and partly (er, mostly!) by whim; for this year's challenge, I'll finish that list though.

Using the round-up posts, I visited most of the other participants' blogs, commenting whenever I had something to say.

My favourite read of this Canlit year was Michael Crummey's novel, Galore; the book which I struggled with the most was Nicole Brossard's Fences in Breathing (trans. Susanne Lotbinere-Harwood's).

I did add titles to my TBR list but even more often I find myself moving books up the list thanks to things participants have said.

I've no suggestions to offer (it's very very well managed overall!), but I wonder if there aren't plugins that you could use to reduce your workload when it comes to summarizing our entries. On other hand, perhaps you're already marking down all those books on your TBR list anyhow?!

There are a couple of contemporary authors whose names I'm surprised aren't there (Timothy Taylor, Thomas Wharton, Joan Barfoot, Marie-Claire Blais, etc.), but I'm also surprised there aren't more books listed for some other authors (like Richard B. Wright, Kathy Reichs, Robertson Davies...and I'm surprised nobody read anything of Emma Donoghue's other than Room). But as long as a year seems, in books it's not really all that long when you do the math.

Thanks for all the fun!
