For a readers advisory assignment, I'm hoping that you all can help me out. I'm looking for a read alike for
A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer. Preferably it would be an autobiography, preferably about someone who's had a lot to overcome. Not too preachy, opinionated, or pretentious, but well written . If you have something in mind, but it doesn't match perfectly with this that'd be okay as well.

As Nature Made Him:The Boy Who was Raised as a Girl by David Reimer and Milton Diamond
The true story of David's life after his penis was injured during circumcision and had to be removed. He had an identical twin who was not circumcised. A US doctor was excited about the prospects of studying gender identification of identical twins and convinced the parents to allow David to be operated on to have his testicles removed and be raised as a girl while his twin was raised as a boy.
Wow, that sounds intense and fascinating. Thanks!
I just read a book review about someone raised in Scientology: http://wanda-thenextfifty.blogspot.ca/2013/10/book-review-beyond-belief-jenna.html
It looks pretty interesting to me.
Sorry, just saw this... what about Augusten Burroughs' Running with Scissors, or The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls....
